The Con on the Cob art show is proud to exhibit a wide range of fantasy, science fiction, comic, and genre artworks by a diverse multitude of artists. All artists, professionally published or otherwise, are invited to join the fun. Additionally, the art show hosts a wide variety of art-centered workshops, games, guests, contests, and special events.

Display Space
CotC provides five different opportunities for artists to display and/or sell artwork:

The Artitorium: This is the largest venue in the Art Show. It is made of interconnected gridwall panels for hanging framed or matted original artwork and prints, as well as tables for the display of 3D art and sculpture. Each panel is 6’ tall and 2’ wide. Tables are 6’ x 2’ as well. You may mix and match tables and panels. Art exhibited in the Artitorium auction. Click here to purchase tables, panels, or booths.

The Print Shop: The CotC Print Shop is set up to display and sell prints and artistic reproductions by direct sale. Prices are set by the artists and collectors can buy prints at any time during the show (instead of waiting for the auction to close).

The CotC Burgeoning Artists Contest: This is a section reserved for the artwork of unpublished and aspiring artists and children. There is no fee associated with this space, although you must have a CotC registration badge to display your art here. Artwork in the contest is not for sale through CotC (although you are free to make your own bargains), but our judges will be selecting their favorites and presenting awards.

Art Show Booths: The Artitorium has a limited number of booths available for attending artists. Each 6'x5' booth includes one CotC Registration Badge, a 6'x2' table and a 6'x6' wall space.

     The Exhibit Hall:
Artists are encouraged to purchase booth space in the exhibit hall from which they can handle their own direct sale
s. Con on the Cob does not gather a commission from sales in the exhibit hall.

Cost
We charge only a small fee ($10 per panel or table) to hang and display your artwork in the Artitorium plus a small (10%) a commission on sales. There is no initial charge to sell prints in the print shop, all we collect is the 10% commission. The CotC Burgeoning Artists Contest is completely free of charge. Art show booths are $60 each and include a CotC registration badge. Prices will go up once the early Worm promotional period has expired (August 1, 2008), and space is limited, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible.

The Auction
Here’s how the auction works: It’s really very simple. Each piece of artwork is labeled with a bid sheet, with the minimum bid set by the artist. Throughout the con people may bid on the artwork by writing their name and a higher bid in the next space on the sheet. Whoever has the highest bid by the end of the auction (Saturday at 8:30pm) wins the piece. If nobody has bid on a piece it may still be sold on Sunday at the Sunday Direct Sale price (also set by the artist). Of course if you don’t want to sell your art, just display it in the Artitorium, you can simply write NFS (Not For Sale) on the bid sheet. See, I told you it was simple.

GENERAL RULES

• All artwork submitted should have a Fantasy, Horror/Halloween, or Sci-Fi theme. Exceptions will be made, but primacy of place will be given to artwork with these themes.

• Con on the Cob reserves the right to refuse artwork on the basis of subject matter, quality or space limitations.

• Models, Miniatures and all other pre-cast commercially available forms may be custom modified. However, unmodified, painted miniatures and models may be entered in the Artitorium and/or the Miniatures Painting contest (this is a change from last year).

• Hanging works do not need to be framed, however artwork MUST be matted or otherwise supported for hanging. Work submitted must be marked on the back with the artist’s name and the name of the piece.

• Con on the Cob uses a gridwall and/or pegboard panel hanging system for hanging art and standard hotel tables for 3-D art. All art must be presented on these venues unless otherwise negotiated with the art show director.

• All space is limited and sold by the panel, table, or booth; the Art Show reserves the right to rearrange pieces in order to consolidate space for other artists to exhibit their work in the case that a full panel is not filled.

• Con on the Cob is not responsible for artwork lost, stolen or damaged in transit nor for artwork not picked up by closing of the show. This does not include mail-in art, which will be returned according to the instructions given in the artist’s registration.

• The artist must sign and complete the Rules & Procedures Form before any works will be displayed. This form must be on file during the show.

PRINT SHOP

• Artwork in the CotC Print Shop is sold by direct sale.

• All prints submitted to the Print Shop must be labeled with the artist’s name, the piece name, and the sale price on the back of the piece.

• Prints should be matted or otherwise supported and bagged.

• There is no fee for artwork placed in the Print Shop, although CotC collects a 10% commission on all Print Shop sales.

BIDDING AND AUCTION

• All sales in the Artitorium will be by written/silent bid only. There will be no quick sales unless approved by the Art Show Director.

• Sunday sales will be available for pieces without any bids. The Sunday Sale price will be the minimum bid unless the artist specifies otherwise.

• Items will be sold to the highest written bidder.

• Initial bidding closes at 8 p.m. Saturday. All sales will be finalized by Sunday afternoon.

FEES AND COMMISSIONS

• Art Show panels are 6’ x 2’. There is a fee of $10 per panel (Early Worm Pricing). Panels are assigned based on the order of arrival.

• There is a 10% commission on sales in the Print Shop and Artitorium.

• All payments for pieces sold are by check. Con on the Cob reserves the right to withhold monies previously owed to Con on the Cob from any monies due the artist.

Mail-in Art
Artists who are not attending Con on the Cob are still invited to show and sell their art in the art show. Simply mail your art to the address listed, along with your completed forms and payment, and our art show staff will be happy to hang your work for you.
Pricing for mail-in art is the same as that for attending artists ($10 per panel). An art show panel typically holds about 8-12 framed pictures depending on the size of the artwork. There is no fee for prints displayed in the Print Shop, however a 10% commission will be collected on all Print Shop sales.

Deadline
Although we do not need your actual artwork until September 20, 2008, it is recommended that you mail your registration and payment as soon as possible to make sure your space is reserved. We have a limited number of panels and they are allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. Click here to order panels or tables.

Shipping
Please include funds for return shipping with your artwork and forms.
Mail artwork, completed forms, and payment to:

Con on the Cob Art Show
372 Alpha Ave.
Akron, Ohio 44312

Payment
Your payment (by check) and unsold artwork will be sent to your return address within 30 days of the end of the con.

The Con on the Cob Print Shop is the place to be for art prints who want to get noticed. All an artist has to do is prepare the prints for display, give them to the Art Show staff, and go off and enjoy the con. We’ll sell them for you (or try to, anyway) at the price you set, collect our measly 10% commission, and give you the money when we’re done. The Print Shop is open to any artist, whether you are attending the con or not.

Preparation
Prints in the Print Shop must be bagged, boarded or otherwise supported, and labeled with the artists’s name, the piece’s title, and the sale price on the back. Multiple identical prints in the same bag do not have to be individually boarded and labeled as long as the bag or an identifying card in the bag is identified correctly. The artist or a representative must fill out and sign the Print Shop Control Sheet (it lists the titles and number of each piece). That’s it. You’re all set.

Prints vs. Originals - Battle of the Champeenz
Perhaps all this high-tech, fancy-schmancy, artsy-fartsy jargon has you confused. It’s possible, and only slightly embarrassing, that some of the terms used here are confusing or unfamiliar. If that’s the case, read on…
The phrase “original artwork” refers to the actual piece of art directly created by the artist. If we’re talking about a painting it’s the actual painting itself. A “print” is a reproduction of that painting, such as by lithography, digital printing, etc… In general the original artwork is of far more value to a collector, but is often too expensive for the casual afficianado, who is usually more likely to buy an inexpensive print than a potentially costly original.
Some media, such as intaglio printing and digital art, do not create an original artwork. Instead, artists often produce only a limited run to increase the value of each individual print. Sometimes an artist will consider the first print in a series to be the original, pricing it thusly, but this seems kind of shady to me.

Con on the Cob hosts a number of workshops and demos in various techinques and media. If you have any ideas for workshops, or if you would like to volunteer to lead a workshop or demo, please make your suggestions in the CotC Discussion Forum or email Gunnar or Andy. Anyone leading a demo or workshop will receive one free panel in the Artitorium for each event run.

Art Workshop Schedule (times TBA)
Making Your Way as an Artist - Ed Beard Jr.
Acrylic Painting Technique - Ed Beard Jr.
Painting Miniatures - Judith Northwood
Sculpting Miniatures - Sandra Garrity
More demos coming soon.

Join Artist Guests Ed Beard Jr., Sandra Garrity, Larry Elmore, and fellow artists and fans for champagne, snacks, and conversation. Tour the Artitorium, quaff the bubbly (or the sparkling grape juice, if you prefer), adopt a European accent, and pretend to know more about artsy-fartsy stuff than you actually do. Black turtlenecks and berets are optional.
This event is open to everyone, especially artists, fans, art directors, art buyers, and other floofy sorts.

Time: Thursday at 8:00-10:00pm
Place:
Begins in the Artitorium and moves to The Con Suite (Room 200)

Please contact Andy if you are interested in sponsoring this event or donating food, drinks, decorations, or funds in exchange for promotional consideration or sweet, sweet lovin'.
This is the opposite of the classy-assy Artiste's Soiré. Instead of champagne and polite conversation, this party's all about sketchin' and wretchin' on your own BYOB suds. How well can a booze-addled Meg Lyman draw a twelve-headed flaming whale from Neptune, eating cheese doodles, juggling lobsters, and whistling "White and Nerdy"? Can Tony Steele paint nude portraits of Larry Elmore with his own vomit? What horrors and wonders await our intrepid explorers? Who knows. All I know is: this wasn't my idea and I accept no responsibility for any damages, hurt feelings, or offspring that may result.
Children and law enforcement are definitely not invited.

Time: Thursday at 10:00pm (after the Artiste's Soiré)
Place:
The Con Suite (Room 200)
